INDIA EMERGED AS a key growth market for Washington, D.C., in 2025, ranking first in international visitor spending and second in international visitor volume. Indian travelers generated about $342.7 million in spending and visitation remained about 22 percent above 2019 levels.

The federal district welcomed more than 27.2 million visitors in 2025, generating $11.9 billion in visitor spending, Destination D.C. said in a statement. Visitation slightly exceeded the previous year’s record by 20,000 visitors. Tourism supported 114,013 jobs and generated $2.4 billion in city tax revenue.

Indian travelers contributed through longer stays and higher spending, reinforcing the market’s importance to the destination, The Economic Times reported, citing Destination DC.

“India continues to be one of Washington’s most valuable international markets, with travelers contributing significant economic impact through longer stays and higher visitor spending,” said Elliott Ferguson, Destination DC president and CEO, according to the Times. “Strong interest from Indian travelers in D.C.’s educational, cultural and premium experiences reinforces the importance of maintaining visibility and strong partnerships in this growth market.”

Of the 27.2 million visitors in 2025, 25.1 million were domestic travelers, a slight year-on-year increase, the statement said. International visitation fell 4 percent, while D.C. outperformed the broader US decline of 5.5 per cent in international arrivals.

The organization noted the economic contribution of tourism marketing initiatives, saying a $19.5 million advertising campaign in spring and summer 2025 generated $470 million in visitor spending and $41.3 million in tax revenue.

Fred Dixon, Brand USA president and CEO, said tourism growth in Washington, DC reflects the destination’s strength and global appeal.

“International visitors tend to stay longer, spend more and build deeper connections to the U.S.,” he said.

Washington is preparing for increased tourism demand linked to the U.S. 250th anniversary celebrations in 2026. Destination DC has launched DC250 campaigns supported by storytelling initiatives, hotel packages and year-round events.

The city expects strong convention and events business in 2026, with 18 citywide conventions projected to generate about 376,000 room nights, attract 246,000 attendees and contribute about $317 million in economic impact.

Planned tourism developments in the city include the National Geographic Museum of Exploration, expansion of the National Air and Space Museum, upgrades to the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial areas and new exhibits at the African American Civil War Memorial Museum.

In October, Brand USA launched “America the Beautiful,” a global campaign to increase international travel and hotel demand.
