SETUPURAM HOTELS & RESORTS will develop the 300-key Taj Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, India. The greenfield project will be built in phases on a 70-acre site.

The resort will offer direct beach access and connect to NH87, with the Pamban Bridge nearby. Rameswaram is home to the Ramanathaswamy Temple and is connected to Madurai and Tiruchirappalli, with road, rail and airport projects expected to improve access, Indian Hotels Co. Ltd. said in a statement.

The hotel will include a wellness center, two restaurants, a bar lounge, a pool bar, banquet and convention spaces, meeting rooms, swimming pool, fitness center and a spa.

"Rameswaram is among India's most prominent spiritual destinations, attracting travelers from India and overseas,” said Suma Venkatesh, IHCL executive vice president for real estate and development. “With growing infrastructure and improving connectivity, the destination presents significant potential for religious, spiritual, leisure and MICE tourism.”

Setupuram Hotels is promoted by four partners; Ganesh Mahadevan based in Switzerland; Rajesh Jograj Bafna based in Singapore; Vinay Aggarwal based in Dubai; and Rahul Saraogi based in Chennai. Over the past two decades, Mahadevan assembled the estate, starting with a beachfront parcel and expanding it to about 350 acres.

Bafna, Setupuram Hotels director, said the partnership marks a milestone for Setupuram Hotels and will support tourism in the region.

The addition takes IHCL’s Tamil Nadu portfolio to 35 hotels, including 16 under development, the statement said.

Recently, IHCL opened the 181-key Taj Palace, Lucknow, its second Taj hotel in Uttar Pradesh.
