ANTHONY CAPUANO, MARRIOTT International president and CEO, received the 2026 Shatterproof Hospitality Hero Award on Jan. 27 in Los Angeles. The Ninth Annual Shatterproof Hospitality Heroes Reception at the Americas Lodging Investment Summit raised $2.1 million to support Shatterproof’s work addressing addiction.
Around 75 hospitality companies participated, raising funds to support Shatterproof’s work to transform systems of care, support families and reduce stigma related to addiction, Shatterproof said in a statement.
“I humbly accept this honor on behalf of everyone at Marriott who is committed to showing up with empathy, dignity and care for our people and for our industry,” Capuano said. “Addiction touches every one of us as family members, as leaders, as friends and as employers. In the hospitality industry, the need is especially urgent. Shatterproof is charting a new, better, more compassionate path forward.”
Shatterproof was founded in 2012 by Gary Mendell, co-founder of HEI Hotels & Resorts, after the death of his son Brian in 2011. Mendell serves as chairperson emeritus.
Employees in restaurants and hotels have some of the highest rates of substance use in the U.S. workforce, Shatterproof said, citing data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
“Seventeen percent of accommodations and food services employees had a substance use disorder in the past year and 15 percent of workers in the hospitality industry struggle with severe alcohol-related problems,” the statement said.
Substance use disorder also affects businesses, costing billions annually in healthcare expenses, absenteeism and lost productivity.
Pam Jenkins, Shatterproof’s CEO, said she is inspired by the hospitality industry’s leadership and commitment to addressing substance use disorder.
“Leadership is about creating the conditions for people to succeed,” she said. “When we invest in wellbeing, address addiction with rigor and empathy and act together, we don’t just change outcomes—we change lives. Substance use disorder is a preventable disease and through education, awareness and collective action, this industry is reducing stigma, expanding access to care and saving lives.”
Since 2016, hospitality partners have raised more than $12 million for Shatterproof through events held at ALIS, representing more than 150 companies and 500 industry leaders, the statement said. Partners have also expanded use of Shatterproof’s Just Five employee education program, supported Walks to End Addiction and hosted workplace discussions on substance use disorder.
Amanda Hite, STR president, received the 2025 Shatterproof Hospitality Hero Award for her work raising awareness of substance use disorder and reducing stigma. She is the first woman to receive the award.
