M3 founder to receive Hunter Conference Award

John McKibbon III, founder of M3 and chairman of McKibbon Hospitality and McKibbon Places, will receive the 2025 Hunter Conference Award for Excellence and Inspiration at the Hunter Hotel Investment Conference on March 18. The award recognizes hoteliers for leadership, citizenship and innovation.

McKibbon, a third-generation entrepreneur leading several hospitality companies, has shaped the industry while advocating for service and community, Hunter said in a statement.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this recognition from Hunter,” said McKibbon. “Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside many talented leaders and innovators, who have inspired me to think bigger and helped build McKibbon Hospitality, M3, and McKibbon Places. I’ve always been passionate about hospitality, and in everything I’ve done, I have strived to make a positive impact, whether on our guests, clients, industry partners, or community members. That is the legacy I hope to leave behind.”

McKibbon’s hospitality career began in 1977 when he joined his family’s business, the statement said. Following his father’s role in one of the first Holiday Inn franchises, McKibbon worked as hotel GM and regional manager before leading the company in the early 1990s. Under his leadership, McKibbon Hospitality became a recognized leader in hotel development, real estate, and management, with a portfolio of over 100 properties.

Building on his success with McKibbon Hospitality, McKibbon founded M3, the first company to bring hospitality accounting online. M3 recently sold a majority stake to Blackstone, with McKibbon remaining a major investor. He also founded McKibbon Places, focused on hotel development and renovation.

Beyond his business achievements, McKibbon advocates for education and mentorship, partnering with universities like Florida International University and the University of South Florida to mentor future hospitality leaders, Hunter said. Through the McKibbon Family Foundation, he and his wife, Letitia, support nonprofit organizations aligned with their values.

Through the McKibbon Hospitality Foundation, every dollar raised through hotel fundraising events and volunteer hours is matched, enriching the communities where McKibbon Hospitality operates.

“John’s impact on the hospitality industry is profound, but what truly sets him apart is his unwavering commitment to service and community,” said Lee Hunter, chairman of the Hunter Conference. “His legacy goes far beyond business achievements—he has created an environment where people are encouraged to grow, give back, and make a meaningful difference. John embodies the spirit of excellence, leadership, and service this award is meant to recognize.”

Jesse Cole, owner and founder of the Savannah Bananas, will deliver a special address at the 36th Hunter Hotel Investment Conference on March 19. The event, hosted by Hunter Hotel Advisors, will be held March 18 to 20 at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

RevPAR trends for US extended-stay hotels in April 2025

Report: Extended-stay April performance mixed

What's the latest on US extended-stay hotel performance for April 2025?

U.S. EXTENDED-STAY AND overall hotel RevPAR declined in April, reflecting their long-term correlation, according to The Highland Group. Economy and mid-price extended-stay hotels performed better than their respective classes, while upscale extended-stay hotel RevPAR fell in line with all upscale hotels, according to STR/CoStar.

The Highland Group’s “US Extended-Stay Hotels Bulletin: April 2025” reported a 3.6 percent year-over-year increase in extended-stay room nights available. This gain partly reflects the addition of mid-price brands WaterWalk by Wyndham in May 2024 and Executive Residency by Best Western in January to the database.
