Boston tops global hotel prices at $375 a night

Boston is the most expensive city for hotel stays, according to a Cheaphotels.org survey.

BOSTON AND NEW York are the most expensive cities for hotel stays, according to a Cheaphotels.org survey. Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is the least expensive and Mumbai, India, ranks 49th out of 100 cities.


In the report, “A Comparison of Hotel Rates in 100 Cities in the World – Hotel Price Index 2025,” Boston topped the list, with the cheapest double room averaging $375 per night. New York City followed at $338, and Zurich was third at $274. Mumbai’s average rate was $135.

The survey recorded hotel rates in 100 cities worldwide, including 25 in the U.S. and Canada and 10 in the UK and Ireland, Cheaphotels said. For each city, the average price of the cheapest double room was calculated for October. Only centrally located hotels rated 3 stars or higher were considered, with a 4-star minimum for most cities in Asia, South Africa and Africa.

Detroit ranked sixth globally, with average nightly rates of $240 for the cheapest double room. Other U.S. destinations ranked highly, with Washington, D.C. just behind Detroit at $227, followed by Austin, Texas, at $184. Chicago at $176 and San Diego at $175 were in the top 30, while Seattle at $164, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Philadelphia at $158, Dallas at $139, New Orleans and Denver at $148, San Francisco at $134, Miami at $134 and Orlando, Florida, at $116 appear further down.

The top 10 also includes European cities: Milan ranked 4th at $268, Paris 5th at $257, Rome 8th at $224, Vienna 9th at $205 and Amsterdam 10th at $204, reflecting hotel rates across Europe.

The least expensive city is Phnom Penh, where rooms average $31 per night.

The table lists the 10 most expensive cities for hotel stays, showing the average rate for the cheapest double room in a central 3-star or higher hotel from Oct. 1 to 31:

The U.S. lost more than $2.39 billion in domestic travel due to the government shutdown that began Oct. 1 and the loss continues to grow every second, according to a real-time tracker on the U.S. Travel Association website.
