SM GROUP AND Poddar Group plan to develop the 150-key Hyatt Regency Gangtok in Gangtok, Sikkim, India. The project will be executed by Gyalshing Hotels Pvt. Ltd., a special purpose vehicle under SM Hotels and Resorts Pvt. Ltd., the hospitality arm of SM Developers.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang laid the foundation stone at a ceremony at Chintan Bhawan, Sikkim Express reported, citing a government statement. The 3.27-acre hotel site is two kilometers from MG Marg, near Enchey Monastery and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology.
Gangtok recorded more than 1.7 million tourist arrivals in 2025, including more than 71,000 foreign visitors, according to PTI. Sikkim can host 42,000 to 45,000 tourists per day and 150 new hotel rooms in the city center are expected to attract higher-spending domestic and international travelers.
Amenities include a temperature-controlled outdoor pool, a 3,000 square feet spa, a gym, and about 13,000 square feet of meeting and event space.
Guwahati-based SM is led by Chairman Sarat Kumar Jain and Kolkata-based Poddar by Director Ankit Poddar.
"This foundation stone is a symbol of trust, partnership and the bright future we are building together in our Himalayan state, Sikkim,” said Tamang, according to The Economic Times. "Tourism is a vital pillar of our economy and a lifeline for thousands of families. The flow of visitors consistently exceeds twice our population, reflecting Sikkim's growing importance as a preferred destination. I am confident that the Hyatt Regency will reflect the spirit of Sikkim, showcasing local art, promoting local cuisine, sourcing local produce and supporting local talent."
Vikas Agarwal, managing director and CEO of SM Developers, said the development marks a milestone for Sikkim’s hospitality sector.
“Designed by SCSY Studio, Singapore, the hotel will offer experiential luxury, premium culinary offerings and modern event infrastructure," he said. "We are confident it will become the preferred destination for travelers, corporate delegations and international visitors exploring the Eastern Himalayas."
The development will include a licensed casino.
Hyatt recently announced updates to its World of Hyatt loyalty program, expanding award redemptions from three to five levels across eight categories starting in May. The framework aligns hotels with category caps, manages peak demand and reduces category shifts.
