Monika Nerger

AS Global Chief Information Officer at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Monika Nerger has transformed the luxury hospitality experience through innovative technology. For over two decades, she has pioneered digital strategies that blend cutting-edge solutions with exceptional customer service.

"In a world of increasing complexity, you will never have all the information you need to make the perfect decision. Indecision may have higher opportunity costs than trying out a new technology and accepting the consequences," Monika told Forbes, revealing the philosophy that drives her success.

What distinguishes Monika is her willingness to embrace calculated risks. After completing her MBA, she faced a pivotal crossroads: pursue academia with a PhD scholarship in digital marketing or dive into business. She chose the latter, launching a career that would ultimately reshape hospitality technology.

She joined Mandarin Oriental, which owns and operates some of the most luxurious hotels, resorts and residences located in prime destinations around the world, in 2006 as Vice President of Technology, the Americas, and was promoted to her current role in 2011. She is based in the Group’s Hong Kong and San Francisco offices.

As the Global CIO, Monika oversees all technological aspects of Mandarin Oriental's operation, guiding the brand's customer-centric digital strategies. Her leadership has been instrumental in positioning Mandarin Oriental, as a leader in the luxury hotel sector.

Before Mandarin Oriental, Monika honed her expertise at Pan Pacific Hotels, KPMG Consulting, and Royal Caribbean Cruises Lines. This diverse background, combined with her computer science degree and MBA from the University of Miami, equipped her with a unique perspective on hospitality innovation.

Her global experience spans Asia Pacific/China, Europe, North America, and emerging markets, giving her insights into diverse customer needs and technological applications. This international outlook has proven invaluable as she guides Mandarin Oriental's worldwide technological operations.

Beyond her corporate role, Monika serves as Vice President and board member of Hotel Technology Next Generation, a non-profit trade organization connecting hospitality companies with technology providers. She also sits on the advisory board of the China Hospitality Technology Alliance, extending her influence across the industry.

Major media outlets including CNN, The New York Times, Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, and Forbes have featured her insights, cementing her status as an industry thought leader.

What makes Monika truly powerful is her rare combination of technical expertise, business acumen, and visionary leadership. While many executives excel in one area, she seamlessly integrates all three, anticipating how emerging technologies can enhance the guest experience while delivering business value.

At Mandarin Oriental, this translates to technological innovations that feel intuitive rather than intrusive—the hallmark of true luxury in the digital age.
