Member hoteliers statewide are offering shelter to displaced families

AAHOA initiative supports California wildfire recovery

AAHOA AND ITS charitable foundation launched the “Hope & Haven: California Wildfire Recovery Initiative” to support communities affected by the ongoing wildfires. The campaign focuses on rallying resources for relief, including room-night donations, fundraising, and community engagement, the association said in a statement.

Deadly wildfires that began on Tuesday have devastated Los Angeles, killing at least 10 people and destroying more than 10,000 homes and structures. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency in California on Friday to address the health impacts of wildfires in Los Angeles County, Reuters reported.

"AAHOA members and the hospitality industry have always stepped up in times of crisis, and the California wildfires are no exception," said Miraj Patel, AAHOA’s chairman. "Hoteliers across the state are opening their doors to provide shelter for families displaced by these fires. True hospitality plays a vital role in offering safety, care, and hope, and this initiative highlights the compassion and leadership of AAHOA members and hotel owners."

The wildfires have displaced countless families, creating an urgent need for shelter, resources, and relief, AAHOA said. AAHOA and ACF are leading efforts to coordinate with state and local agencies to ensure resources are mobilized effectively.

Laura Lee Blake, AAHOA’s president and CEO, said the hospitality industry has long been a source of stability in times of crisis.

"The AAHOA community extends its deepest gratitude to the brave firefighters, first responders, and others working tirelessly to protect lives and property," she said. "We are also praying for those who have lost their homes, loved ones, and livelihoods. Our members' generosity in providing shelter, donations, and support underscores their unwavering commitment to serving those in need. This initiative gives hoteliers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference and help families rebuild."

Nishant “Neal” Patel, ACF’s chairman, said the AAHOA Charitable Foundation is focused on making a meaningful difference, and this initiative exemplifies that mission.

"In the face of the California wildfires, our foundation is proud to support efforts that bring relief and hope," he said. "From providing room nights to raising critical funds, this campaign demonstrates the collective strength and compassion of AAHOA members and the hospitality industry. Together, we are offering shelter and laying the foundation for recovery and resilience in the communities we serve."

In November, AAHOA’s final charity golf tournament of 2024, held at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, raised $76,000 for the AAHOA Charitable Foundation. The event, with nearly 100 players and 12 sponsors, was one of three tournaments held last year that collectively raised $241,000 for various charities.
