UPPER MIDSCALE HOTELS under construction stood at 205,270 rooms in 2,060 hotels this month, making it the largest number of projects across the chain-scale pipeline, according to Lodging Econometrics. Upscale projects took second place with 1,258 hotels or 162,609 rooms. Together, the two categories make up 67 percent of all projects in the total pipeline.
InterContinental Hotels Group’s Holiday Inn Express had the highest number of projects in upper midscale with 426 hotels or 39,393 rooms. It is followed by Hilton’s Home2 Suites with 343 projects and 35,845 rooms; and Hampton Inn with 322 hotels totaling 33,109 rooms.
Marriott’s Residence Inn topped the upscale category with 187 projects with 23,617 rooms, followed by SpringHill Suites with 149 hotels or 17,182 rooms. Hilton Garden Inn came in third with 134 projects and 17,734 rooms.
The two chain scales are forecasted to have the highest guest room growth rates through 2018. Upper midscale is expected to grow its room count by 4.9 percent this year and by 5.3 percent in 2018. Upscale is predicted to grow 5.4 percent in 2017 and 5.6 percent in 2018.
