The 16-story building at St. Clair and East Ontario streets in downtown Chicago is undergoing extensive renovations to reposition it as the St. Clair Hotel, an upscale economy boutique hotel that will be the first in The Red Collection, Red Roof Inn Inc.s new soft brand.

RED ROOF INN INC. today unveiled a strategy to expand its brand footprint beyond the 500 owned and franchised hotels in its portfolio.
The Columbus, Ohio-based company announced The Red Collection, a soft brand aimed at independent boutique hotels in city centers.
The first hotel to join the group will be a downtown Chicago property named the St. Clair Hotel. The 16-story, 109-room building around the corner from the famed Magnificent Mile is the beginning of Red Roof’s effort to give its frequent as well as new guests an option in “key markets in key locations,” said Andrew Alexander, president of Red Roof Inn Inc., during the company’s brand conference held Sept. 24-26 in New Orleans.
