The 122-room WoodSpring Suites Portland North Gresham in Portland, Oregon, is the brand’s 250th opening and its first in Oregon. Its opening also marks one year since Choice Hotels International acquired the brand.

THE NEWLY-OPENED WoodSpring Suites Portland North Gresham in Portland, Oregon, is three things rolled into one. It is the 250th WoodSpring to open, but the first in Oregon, and its opening is marking the celebration of the first anniversary of Choice Hotels International’s acquisition of the brand.

With 122 rooms and four stories, the North Gresham WoodSpring is part of Choice’s efforts to expand the extended-stay brand into new markets, Choice Vice President and General Manager for extended stay brands Ralph Thiergart said. “Portland is one of the most business-friendly cities in the nation and an ideal fit for the brand’s milestone 250th opening,” he said.

As a milestone marking the first anniversary of WoodSpring under Choice, the Portland property is another part of an investment that has paid off, according to Choice. Since the acquisition, the company’s RevPAR increased 7.6 percent in 2018 over the previous year. It awarded 75 contracts, more than any before for Woodspring, and there are 117 hotels in the brand’s pipeline.

Indeed, Choice’s total number of new extended-stay franchise agreements awarded increased by 156 percent last year, with agreements for the company’s MainStay and Suburban brands rising 37-percent. Almost 90 percent of WoodSpring Suites guests stay for more than a week.

“Choice evaluates growth opportunities carefully—and our deliberate strategy to welcome WoodSpring Suites into our family of brands is paying off,” Patrick Pacious, Choice’s president and CEO, said. “The WoodSpring Suites brand has seen significant business delivery growth nearly every month since the acquisition. As we continue to integrate the power of Choice with the brand, WoodSpring Suites’ trajectory as one of the fastest growing and most profitable hotel brands is expected to yield high returns on investment for its owners.”

Last month, Choice agreed to develop 27 new WoodSpring Suites hotels throughout Michigan and North Carolina as well as Jacksonville, Florida, and Nashville, Tennessee.  Other WoodSprings are planned for Miami and Orlando, Florida.; Sacramento, California; and San Antonio, Texas. Choice anticipates having around 300 WoodSpring Suites hotels open across the country by the end of 2020.

The Portland WoodSpring is a smoke-free facility and is near Portland International Airport, several universities, hospitals and corporate offices for Nike, Boeing and Lithia Motors Inc. Each suite in the hotel includes an in-room kitchen with a full-size refrigerator and free Wi-Fi.  Other amenities include an expanded lobby with a coffee station, free parking, a guest laundry room and fitness center.
