AN ASIAN AMERICAN hotel company has opened a full-service property on a Gulf Coast site devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Shivam of America of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, developed the Hilton Garden Inn Biloxi, on the Gulf Coast of Biloxi, Mississippi. Hari Patel and Shashikant C. “Sam” Bhakta are co-founders of Shivam of America.

The City of Biloxi sold Shivam the nearly two-acre waterfront tract in 2016 for a little more than $1 million, according to local news reports. A hospital and a harbor once stood at the site. The city council approved tax breaks of 50 percent a year for the first five years, provided the hotel create 45 sustainable jobs.

The 100-room hotel opened in May. It has a restaurant called The Gulf Coast Grille and 1,500 square feet of meeting space. Hilton Focus Service Division is the hotel’s manager.

Two Asian American owned companies, Hawkeye Hotels and JR Hospitality, are working together to redevelop a landmark building in Minneapolis into a dual-branded Home2 Suites by Hilton and Tru by Hilton.
